How much torque do you need?
Start here, because torque is the headline number on every box and it’s the one most people overbuy. Torque is twisting force — the grunt that decides whether the fastener keeps moving or the tool bogs down and strips the head. Impact drivers quote it in newton-metres (Nm), and the range you’ll see runs from about 150Nm on a budget tool up past 280Nm on the strong ones.
For the work most of us do, the useful ceiling sits a long way below the top of that range. Around 150 to 180Nm drives decking screws, batten screws into framing pine, and coach bolts up tight without complaint. You only need the big 250Nm-plus numbers for the heavy end — long structural screws all day, lag bolts into hardwood, seized fasteners that need real grunt to crack. If that’s not the work you’ve got, the extra torque is a number you paid for and rarely reach for.
One impact mode, or several?
Cheaper drivers have a single impact setting: full noise, all the time. Dearer ones give you two, three or four. The setting worth caring about is the low one. Drive a small screw into a cabinet hinge on a single-speed impact and it’s easy to bury it or snap the head clean off, because that tool only ever hits at full force. A low mode eases the torque back so the driver does the holding-back for you, instead of you riding the trigger and hoping.
If you mostly drive bigger fasteners, one mode is fine and you’ll never miss the others. If you do delicate work — cabinet screws, small fixings, anything where overdriving wrecks the job — the speed settings earn their place. The four-mode tools add an “assist” setting that starts slow to stop the screw walking, then speeds up; useful, though plenty of people set it once and forget it’s there.
Brushless or brushed?
You’ll see “brushless” on the dearer drivers, and it’s worth understanding before you decide. A brushed motor has little carbon blocks that rub on the spinning part to feed it power; they wear down, run hot, and drink through a battery faster. A brushless motor swaps them for electronics. It runs cooler, squeezes more work out of each charge, and lasts years longer.
The plain way to think about it: if the driver’s going to get regular use, brushless pays for itself in runtime and life. If it’s coming out a few times a year to hang shelves and build flat-packs, a brushed driver does the same job and you can pocket the difference. Skin or kit?
This is the one that trips up more first-time buyers than any spec. Two drivers at the same price aren’t the same buy if one’s a skin and the other’s a kit. A skin is the tool on its own — no battery, no charger. A kit comes ready to work, with a battery and charger in the box. So a well-made skin can ring up cheaper on the shelf than a budget kit while costing you more by the time you’ve added the pack and charger it needs to switch on.
Before you compare two drivers on price, then, work out what each one costs to get driving. If you already own a cordless platform, the answer’s easy — buy the skin that runs on the packs you’ve got, and you’ve skipped the dearest part. If you don’t own one yet, that’s the bigger decision, because the driver you pick comes with a battery family attached, and you’ll keep adding to it for years. Read the platform comparison before you spend. When Joel and I were fitting out the Gippsland house, the tool that got picked up was rarely the one with the best spec sheet; it was whatever ran on the battery already sitting on the bench.
Does the size matter?
More than you’d think, and it’s the spec people forget. The number to look at is head length — how far the business end sticks out from the chuck. A short head gets the driver into places a long one can’t: between studs, inside a cabinet carcass, up under a sink. The compact tools have crept down to around 110 to 125mm, and on awkward work that’s the difference between driving the screw and giving up to reach for a hand screwdriver.
Weight matters too, but less than the spec sheet makes out — most compact drivers sit under a kilo as a skin, and the battery adds more than the tool does. If you’re working overhead or for long stretches, lighter is easier on the arm. For the odd job around the house, any of them is light enough that it won’t be the thing you remember.
Warranty and the fine print
The warranty is a real product fact and it’s worth checking before you buy, because the terms vary more than people expect — anywhere from three years to six depending on the brand. The catch is that most of the longer ones only apply if you register the tool within 30 days of buying it; skip the sign-up and the cover drops back. DeWalt, for one, spells out the registration requirement on its warranty page, and the other brands run similar schemes. Do the registration the day the tool comes home and photograph your receipt — that’s the gap between the cover you were promised and the cover you can claim. One caveat on the cheapest listings: the sharpest online prices are often “plain packaging” stock brought in outside the official Australian channel, and on those the manufacturer cover — and the 30-day registration with it — may not apply at all, so check who you’re buying from before you count the warranty as part of the deal.
One more thing worth knowing: on top of any manufacturer warranty, Australian Consumer Law may cover you if a tool fails earlier than it reasonably should, whoever sold it to you. It’s not a substitute for registering — but it’s a backstop the brand warranty doesn’t replace.
What I’d buy
For nearly every DIYer: a brushless impact driver in the 150 to 180Nm range, on a mainstream battery platform you can grow into. That covers the work a house throws up — decking, framing, flat-packs, the fixings on a hundred small jobs — without paying for grunt you’ll use once a year. Get the low-mode speed control if you do fine work, and check the head length if you’re forever reaching into tight spots.
The two tiles above bracket that brief: the lighter, cheaper Makita DTD153 (170Nm) hits it for most DIYers, while the harder-hitting DeWalt DCF860N (282Nm) sits deliberately above it — the step up only if you fasten heavy often enough to use the extra grunt. If you’re choosing between those two specifically, the head-to-head lays them out side by side. And if it’s a short head and a long warranty you’re after, the Milwaukee M18FID3 is the compact one to look at. Whichever you land on, add up the battery and charger before you spend — on a skin, that’s the part of the cost the price tag leaves out.
