It sits at the top of DeWalt’s compact 18V XR impact driver line: a brushless tool built around 282Nm of torque and a three-speed trigger, sold as a bare skin — the tool on its own, with no battery or charger in the box. XR is DeWalt’s premium 18V platform, the dearer and more trade-leaning end of cordless, and this driver is priced to match. What you’re paying for is grunt and control, and whether that’s worth it comes down to what you fasten and which battery you’ve already committed to.

How much grunt does it have?

The headline is 282Nm of torque. Torque is twisting force — the grunt behind the bit — and 282Nm is a big serve of it, more than you’ll find on most compact drivers and well past what a drill could put out before it stalled. It drives long structural screws, sinks coach bolts up tight, and walks lag screws into hardwood without bogging down and leaving a fastener standing proud.

The grunt comes from the impact mechanism. Lean on a normal drill and it just twists harder in your wrist until the screw stalls or the head strips. An impact driver instead fires off quick hammer blows in the direction it’s turning, so the fastener keeps moving and your wrist doesn’t cop the kickback. That much is true of every impact driver. What sets the DCF860N apart is what it does with the power.

It’s got three speed settings, not one, and that’s the part I’d pay for ahead of the raw torque number. The low setting eases back to a gentle 141Nm for small screws and soft material, a middle step sits at 242Nm, and the full 282Nm is there when you reach for it. The low mode is the useful one. Drive a small screw into a cabinet hinge on a single-speed impact and it’s easy to bury it or snap the head clean off; the low setting backs off so you don’t. The motor is brushless — the newer design with no carbon brushes rubbing on the spinning core to wear down and rob power. On a tool you’ll keep for a decade, that’s where the extra money quietly earns itself back.

What’s it like to use?

Small, which is most of the point of a modern impact driver. At 122mm nose to tail it gets into the back corner of a kitchen cabinet where a longer tool jams against the side. The trade is weight: at 1.09kg as a skin it’s a couple of hundred grams heavier than the lightest drivers in this class, and you feel that driving screws overhead under a deck frame for an afternoon. For most work it sits fine in the hand. If yours is mostly up high, the lighter tools have the edge.

The light is a standout. Instead of one LED off to the side, the DCF860N rings the chuck with a band of LEDs rated at 82 lumens, so the light lands evenly around the bit with no single hard shadow falling across the screw. Anyone who’s worked head-down inside a dark wall cabinet, squinting at a fastener the tool itself is shading, knows the difference that makes.

The catch is the noise, and it’s the one every impact driver carries. It’s loud — that hammering racket is the mechanism doing its job, not a fault — so a set of earmuffs lives next to it, and the neighbours will know the second you pull the trigger.

What does buying it commit you to?

More than a driver. Buying the DCF860N is buying into DeWalt XR, and that decision outlives the tool by years — every cordless tool you add later runs off the same battery, so the platform you pick now sets what your next ten purchases cost. XR is excellent gear with a deep range, but it’s the dearer platform across the board and it leans professional rather than weekend-shed. If you’re already on XR, that’s the whole case for this driver: it’s the strong, controllable one that runs the batteries you own. If you’re starting from nothing, it’s worth knowing you’re signing up to the pricier end before you buy the cheapest part of it.

One bit of admin, because it’s dull and it matters. DeWalt’s three-year warranty only counts if you register the tool — through MyDEWALT within four weeks of buying it. There’s a second catch specific to this listing: the sharpest online prices on the DCF860N are usually “plain packaging” stock — parallel imports brought in outside the official Australian channel — and that cover generally attaches to tools bought through authorised Australian sellers, so the local warranty may not apply at all. Check who you’re buying from before you count three years of cover as part of the deal.

Should you buy it?

Buy it if you fasten heavy and you’re on DeWalt XR — structural screws, coach bolts, lag screws into hardwood — because this is the tool that makes that work quick, and the three-speed trigger means it still handles the small fiddly screws without snapping heads. The 8.7 is a straight call: it’s the strongest, most controllable driver of its size, and the ring light and low mode earn their place. It loses a little for being skin only, sitting heavier than the lightest options, and being tied to the dearer platform.

If you’re not already on XR, the harder question is the platform, not the tool.
