What to look for in safety gear
Match it to the hazard
A paper dust mask for sweeping, a respirator with cartridges for paint and solvent fumes, wrap-around glasses for grinding, earmuffs for anything loud. The gear has to suit the job.
Fit and seal
Protection only works if it fits. A respirator needs to seal on clean-shaven skin, glasses to sit close with no gaps, earplugs to seat properly. Do a seal check before you start.
Australian standard (AS/NZS)
For paid or site work you need AS/NZS-marked gear: 1716 (respirators), 1337 (eye), 1270 (hearing). US or EU ratings are fine for DIY but aren't certified for Australian workplaces.
Reusable or disposable
A reusable respirator or earmuffs cost more up front but work out cheaper with regular use — you just swap cartridges or pads. Disposables suit the occasional light, dusty job.
